The unknown story of how in January 1959 the luxurious “Havana Hilton” hotel came to play an important role during the revolution in Cuba. The “Havana Hilton”, later renamed “Habana Libre”, transforms from being a type of capitalistic monument to becoming the main headquarters of Fidel Castro and his revolution.

The takeover is one of the strongest symbols of the changes that came to dominate the dramatic development in Cuba, and the relationship to the USA.

Through examining the history of the “Havana Hilton” we learn much of the first years of the Cuban revolution and nationali- sation of foreign properties. The featured citizens of Havana and the Cuban Exile community in Miami provide further insight into the living conditions in Cuba during the 49 years of American Embargo.
